Position Overview:
Our client is seeking a skilled and experienced Maintenance Manager to oversee all maintenance operations and coordinate maintenance-related procurement. The Maintenance Manager will ensure the effective functioning of maintenance systems, implement preventative maintenance schedules, and manage the repair and refurbishment of mechanical and electrical equipment. This role, primarily based in Lusaka, requires occasional travel to remote camps to provide field support and ensure alignment with on-the-ground operations. A strong understanding of working in remote environments is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintenance Systems Oversight:
- Develop and monitor preventative maintenance schedules for vehicles, boats, generators, solar systems, and other critical equipment.
- Ensure accurate record-keeping of all maintenance activities and servicing across assets.
- Review maintenance logs from regional managers to ensure adherence to schedules.
- Procurement and Spares Management:
- Source quotes for spare parts and maintenance items, ensuring accuracy and suitability.
- Collaborate with the procurement team to ensure timely ordering and delivery of parts to camps.
- Work with stores teams to verify parts upon arrival and train them on spare parts identification and management.
- Minimize equipment downtime by ensuring critical spares are available without overstocking.
- Repair and Refurbishment Coordination:
- Oversee repairs of broken equipment sent from camps to Lusaka, ensuring a quick turnaround.
- Identify and engage reliable repair services in Lusaka for generators, compressors, and electrical appliances.
- Maintain a database of trusted service providers and artisans for specialized repairs.
- Collaboration with Regional Managers:
- Act as the central contact for regional managers to address maintenance needs.
- Provide technical advice and support to regional teams for daily maintenance tasks.
- Understand and address the challenges of remote operations to provide timely solutions.
- Training and Capacity Building:
- Train camp and stores teams on spare parts identification, maintenance, and management.
- Work with regional managers to enhance their teams’ understanding of preventative maintenance systems.
- Travel and Field Support:
- Conduct periodic visits to camps to review maintenance systems and assess equipment conditions.
- Provide on-site support, training, and feedback during visits.
- Reporting and Communication:
- Provide regular updates to senior leadership on maintenance performance, procurement status, and challenges.
- Prepare detailed reports on maintenance activities, costs, and progress against KPIs.
Key Result Areas (KRAs):
- Preventative Maintenance:
- Ensure maintenance schedules are adhered to and minimize unexpected breakdowns.
- Measure: Percentage of assets serviced on schedule and frequency of unplanned repairs.
- Procurement Accuracy:
- Ensure correct parts and materials are sourced and delivered accurately.
- Measure: Number of procurement errors or returned items.
- Turnaround Time for Repairs:
- Minimize lead time for repairing and returning broken equipment.
- Measure: Average repair turnaround time.
- Inventory Management:
- Ensure accurate and efficient management of spare parts in stores.
- Measure: Consistency and accuracy of stores stock records.
- Field Support:
- Conduct regular visits and provide effective support to regional managers.
- Measure: Feedback from regional managers on support quality.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
- Preventative maintenance adherence rate of 95%.
- Procurement error rate of less than 5%.
- Average equipment repair turnaround time of less than two weeks.
- Stock discrepancies below 3%.
- Conduct at least one camp visit per quarter.
Qualifications and Skills:
Technical Skills:
- Strong mechanical knowledge of Land Cruisers, trucks, boats, generators, solar systems, and other critical equipment.
- Familiarity with maintenance schedules, procurement processes, and spare parts management.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical issues in resource-constrained environments.
Field and Remote Working Experience:
- Proven experience working in remote locations under challenging conditions.
- Ability to understand and address field-specific challenges with practical solutions.
Personal Attributes:
- Calm under pressure, adaptable, and resourceful.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, as needed.
Educational Background:
- A technical qualification in mechanics or a related field is preferred.
- Additional certifications in fleet management or preventative maintenance systems are an advantage.
