Job Summary:

Commercial Farm Manager is responsible for all aspects of managing a tobacco farm, from planting and cultivation to harvesting and delivering tobacco to the curing department. This role requires a comprehensive knowledge of agriculture, crop management, and tobacco production techniques, as well as strong managerial skills.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Oversee all stages of tobacco production, from the planting of seeds to the harvesting of the crop. This includes making decisions about the best types of tobacco to grow, the optimal planting times, optimize equipment utilization and the most effective cultivation practices.
  • Manage all daily farm operations such as irrigation, pest and disease control, and fertilizer application. Ensure adherence to agricultural best practices and compliance with local and national regulations.
  • Develop and implement work schedules, and ensure all tasks are carried out effectively and safely.
  • Coordinate the harvest of the tobacco crop and delivery to curing department, ensuring that it is done correctly to maintain the quality of the product.
  • Develop and manage the farm’s budget, control operational costs, and make sure the farm operates efficiently (manpower and equipment utilization). This includes tracking revenue and expenses, planning for future needs, and analyzing financial reports.
  • Ensure the farm’s equipment is properly maintained and that buildings and infrastructure are in good condition.
  • Implement sustainable farming practices and ensure operations comply with environmental regulations.

 

Qualification / Skills and Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Farm Management, or a related field is typically required.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in commercial farming (Preferably Minimum 2,000ha), preferably in a management role, is usually required. Experience specifically with tobacco farming is strongly preferred.
  • Deep understanding of farming practices, especially those related to tobacco. Familiarity with agricultural regulations and sustainability practices.
  • Strong managerial and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good physical condition to handle the demands of farming.
  • Dedication, discipline, and a strong work ethic.
